What Can Cause A Clunking Sound In My Suspension?

As your car ages, worn-out front suspension components can present various issues. Since most suspension parts experience wear over time, replacing them becomes necessary to maintain optimal OE performance. A prevalent symptom of failing suspension components is a noticeable clunking sound originating from the front of your vehicle. This sensation can also be felt through the vehicle's seat or steering wheel. Let's explore a few potential causes of the clunk in your front suspension.

What Causes A Front Suspension Clunk?

The clunking sound coming from your front suspension can be from bad struts, motor mounts, bushings, ball joints, CV axles, and other components.

Bad Struts

A failing strut may produce a clunking noise as its ability to absorb road bumps diminishes, causing increased bouncing in the front end. Confirming this can be done through bounce testing or removing the strut for inspection.

Bad Motor Mounts

A worn-out motor mount can result in a clunking sound due to decreased rubber absorption of engine vibrations. This allows the engine to flex excessively, causing it to hit other components in the engine bay or leading to motor mount shifting during acceleration or sudden stops.

Bad Bushings

Rubber bushings found in various parts of your vehicle, such as suspension and body-to-frame connections, can deteriorate over time due to exposure to heat and elements. This degradation leads to diminished flexibility and absorption between metal components, resulting in clunking sounds. In the case of bad bushings, the clunking typically arises from worn-out suspension bushings.

Bad Ball Joints

Ball joints in a vehicle serve as flexible joints between the steering knuckle and lower control arm. Wear and tear can occur over time, caused by factors such as boot damage, grease loss, or aging. Clunking noises arise when the ball and socket joint lacks sufficient lubrication for smooth operation.

Bad CV Axles

Failing CV axles in a vehicle can produce clunking or popping sounds during low-speed turns. Contaminants can compromise the sealed joint of the CV axles, leading to grease degradation and joint binding. Our durable replacement axles outperform factory components, ensuring a longer-lasting and superior driving experience.
