Upper Vs Lower Control Arms

The suspension system in your vehicle contains a wide variety of components that work together to ensure you have a smooth driving experience. These suspension components are designed to wear out over time, meaning you will have to maintain or replace parts over the years. As one of the most important components, the control arms serve as the direct connection points between your vehicle’s front wheels assemblies and the frame.

What Are Upper Control Arms?

Upper control arms connect to the frame near the top of the wheel well and to the top of the spindle. These control arms are used in non-MacPherson strut applications, double wishbone, where the coil spring is sandwiched in between the upper and lower control arm.

What Are Lower Control Arms?

The lower control arms are mounted similarly but will be connected to the lower portion of the spindle. In non-MacPherson strut applications, the lower control arm is used for seating the spring. In MacPherson applications, only a lower control arm is used as the upper spindle is connected directly to the strut.

How Much Does It Cost To Replace Control Arms?

The cost to replace a control arm will differ from vehicle to vehicle due to the time it takes to remove and replace them. On average, you can expect to pay between $620 and $740 to have a mechanic replace a control arm. This will most likely require a front-end alignment, so you will need to take that into consideration as well.
