Car Maintenance: Checking Your CV Axles

Updated: Apr 22

CV axles, or constant velocity axles, are essential to your vehicle’s steering and transmission system. They are responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the wheels while allowing the wheels’ movement to be flexible. A worn-out CV axle can cause many problems, such as unusual noises, vibrations, and unsafe driving conditions.

5 Steps To Checking Your CV Axels

Step 1: Inspect the boots

The CV joint boots are located at the axle’s ends and are protective covers for the internal components. Over time, the boots can crack, tear, or split, leading to dust and dirt entering the joint and causing damage. If they appear cracked or split, your CV axle may fail, and you should take your vehicle to a mechanic for repair or replacement.

Step 2: Test Drive

One of the most effective ways to check for potential CV axle problems is to test drive your vehicle. A bad CV axle will often cause vibration or clicking noise while driving, especially when making turns. If you notice any unusual noises or vibrations, it’s essential to have your car checked by a mechanic as soon as possible. Driving with a failing CV axle can be hazardous, leading to more significant and expensive damage if left untreated.

Step 3: Conduct A Visual Inspection

A thorough visual inspection of the CV axle can reveal any visible signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. Inspect the CV axle for any cracks, dents, bends, or other signs of damage. Additionally, check the axle and axle shaft for any signs of corrosion or rust, which can weaken the structure and lead to failure.

Step 4: Look For Grease Around The Wheels

If the CV boot is damaged, you may notice grease splattered around your wheels. The grease can leak from a damaged boot and indicate a problem with the CV axle. If you see grease around one or both of your wheels, have a mechanic inspect your cv axles.

Step 5: Check for Play

To check for excess play in the CV axle, hold onto the axle with two hands and try to move it up and down and side to side. If there is any movement, it could indicate a worn-out joint or a problem with the front wheel bearing.
